Acreage electrical is a different job to a suburban block. The switchboard might be 80 metres from the shed. The supply comes in on a private pole that nobody's looked at since the 90s. There's a bore pump at the bottom of the paddock, a gate motor at the top of the drive, and a generator in the shed that someone wired up with an extension lead. Ultralec is based in Pomona and most of our regular customers are on acreage across the Noosa Hinterland, the Mary Valley and out to Gympie — so this is our bread and butter, not an inconvenience.
What We Do on Acreage Properties
- Private power poles — inspection, replacement of rotten or leaning poles, and coordination with Energex for disconnection and reconnection
- Overhead to underground conversions — getting rid of the overhead span before the next storm takes it out
- Long underground runs — sheds, studios, second dwellings, bore pumps and dam pumps, sized properly for voltage drop over distance
- Shed & workshop power — sub-boards, three-phase for welders and compressors, lighting and power points that suit how you actually use the space
- Pumps & irrigation — bore pumps, pressure pumps, dam transfer pumps, irrigation controllers, all on properly protected circuits
- Gate motors & driveway power — underground supply to solar or mains gate motors, keypads and intercoms
- Generator changeover switches — manual or automatic, so you can run the house during an outage without back-feeding the grid
- Rural meter boxes & switchboards — replacing old pillar boxes and ceramic-fuse boards with modern RCBO-protected switchboards
- Granny flats & dual occupancy — sub-mains and separate metering for a second dwelling on the block
- Solar, batteries & EV chargers — acreage roofs and sheds are ideal for solar, and a battery with generator backup is the right setup for properties that lose power every storm season
Private Power Poles — The Bit Everyone Forgets
If the power to your house comes in on a pole that sits inside your boundary, that pole is yours — not Energex's. You're responsible for keeping it safe, and if it's rotten at the base or the crossarm is failing, the network can (and does) issue defect notices. We inspect private poles, quote replacements, and handle the paperwork with Energex so the reconnection happens the same day. Where the pole is done and the run isn't long, converting to underground is often the smarter money.
Long Runs and Voltage Drop
The mistake we fix most often on acreage is undersized cable. Someone ran a standard 2.5mm cable 100 metres to a shed, the lights dim every time the compressor kicks in, and the pump motor burns out early because it's never seeing full voltage. Every long run we do is sized against AS/NZS 3000 voltage-drop limits for the actual load and the actual distance — which usually means bigger cable than you'd expect, but it means the shed works properly for the next 30 years.
Storm Season on Acreage
Hinterland properties lose power more often than town — trees over the lines, lightning strikes, long feeders that take Energex a while to reach. Three things make the biggest difference: whole-home surge protection on the switchboard, a proper generator changeover switch so the genny runs the house safely, and for properties that are sick of it, a solar and battery system with backup capability. We can set up any or all of them.
Pricing
Acreage jobs are quoted per property, because the variables are real — run length, ground conditions, whether there's an existing conduit, the state of the switchboard and what's going on with the pole. As a rough guide, a straightforward 20–30m underground run to a shed with a small sub-board typically runs from $1,500–$2,500. Private pole replacements and long runs are quoted after a site visit. Every quote is itemised and there are no surprises on the invoice.

Ultralec is based in Pomona, and the majority of our regular customers are on 1–100 acre blocks across Pomona, Cooran, Kin Kin, Pinbarren, Ringtail Creek, Federal, Tinbeerwah, Doonan, Kenilworth and the Mary Valley. Long runs, sheds, pumps and dodgy old poles are normal jobs for us, not a special request.
Yes. If you have a private pole on your property that's rotten, leaning, or has been flagged by Energex, we can assess it, quote a replacement, and coordinate the disconnection and reconnection with the network. We can also quote converting the overhead run to underground if the pole is on its last legs anyway.
As far as you need — the cable just gets bigger. A 50m run to a shed with lights and a few power points is routine. 150m+ runs to a bore pump or a second dwelling need voltage-drop calculations and larger cable, which we size properly rather than guessing. We'll tell you if a separate metered supply makes more sense.
