Underground Power Installation โ€” Pomona, Cooroy & Noosa Hinterland

Neat, compliant underground cable runs for outbuildings, sheds, pools, driveways and sub-mains โ€” done properly with the right gear.

Alex from Ultralec operating a cable trenching machine to lay underground power โ€” underground electrical installation Pomona Noosa Hinterland

Running power underground is cleaner, safer and more reliable than overhead cabling โ€” no UV degradation, no trees taking out the line in a storm, no tripping hazards across the yard. Whether you need power to a shed, a granny flat, a pool, a carport, a gate motor or a separate meter, Ultralec handles the full job: cable sizing, trenching, conduit, connection and compliance certificate.

What We Do

  • Shed & outbuilding power โ€” dedicated circuits with their own sub-board, properly rated for the load (lights, power tools, air con, welders)
  • Granny flat sub-mains โ€” metered or unmetered, to current AS/NZS 3000 standards
  • Pool & spa electrical โ€” compliant wiring for pumps, heaters, lights and equipment boards
  • Driveway & gate motor power โ€” low-voltage or 240V, properly protected and conduit-installed
  • Garden & outdoor lighting circuits โ€” underground feeds to external light points, path lighting and feature lighting
  • EV charger sub-mains โ€” dedicated underground run from switchboard to garage or carport charger
  • Sub-mains upgrades โ€” upgrading undersized consumer mains between switchboard and meter

The Trenching

Underground cable runs require trenching to the correct depth โ€” 500mm minimum (typically 600mm in practice) for mains cables under AS/NZS 3000. We arrange the right equipment for the job, whether that's a hire trencher for longer straight runs across lawns or hand digging where space is tight, near existing services, or around established gardens. Conduit goes in the trench, cable runs through the conduit, the trench is backfilled and compacted โ€” lawn and garden left as close to original condition as possible. All underground runs use orange heavy-duty conduit with cable warning tape above for future excavation protection.

Hinterland Properties โ€” Our Specialty

Acreage blocks, rural properties and older hinterland homes often need underground power runs that larger electrical contractors don't want to take on โ€” too far from Brisbane, too much variation in terrain, too site-specific for a standard quote. Alex has run underground power across Pomona, Cooroy, Cooran, Kin Kin, Ringtail Creek and surrounding properties for years. Rocky ground, sloped sites, long runs to sheds โ€” it's standard work for us.

What's Included

  • Site assessment and cable sizing
  • Trench design โ€” route, depth, conduit type
  • Trenching and conduit installation to correct depth (500mm min, typically 600mm)
  • Cable pull and termination
  • Sub-board or connection point at destination
  • RCD/RCBO protection on all new circuits
  • Backfill and site tidy
  • Certificate of Compliance (CCEW) at completion

Pricing

Underground power runs are quoted per job โ€” the main variables are run length, ground conditions, whether a sub-board is needed at the destination, and the load requirements. As a rough guide, a straightforward 20โ€“30m run to a shed with a small sub-board typically runs from $1,500โ€“$2,500. Longer runs, harder ground or larger sub-boards are quoted individually. We'll come out, assess the site and give you a fixed-price quote โ€” no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

AS/NZS 3000 requires a minimum of 500mm depth for mains cables โ€” in practice we typically go to 600mm. All our underground runs use orange heavy-duty conduit with cable warning tape above โ€” protecting the cable and warning anyone who digs in the area in future.

In most cases, no council approval is needed for a standard underground power run to an existing outbuilding on your own property. The electrical work requires a licensed electrician and a Certificate of Compliance (CCEW) at completion โ€” we handle that paperwork for you.

We take care to minimise disruption. For straight runs across lawn we use a trencher for a clean, narrow cut. Backfill is compacted and the site tidied before we leave. In garden beds or near established plants we hand dig carefully.

Yes โ€” all quotes are free and obligation-free. For underground power jobs we'll come out to assess the site before quoting, since run length, ground conditions and the destination setup all affect the price.
