Smoke Alarm Installation — Noosa, Hinterland & Sunshine Coast
Photoelectric. Interconnected. Hardwired. We install smoke alarms that meet current QLD legislation across Noosa, the Sunshine Coast, Cooroy, Pomona and Gympie — the way the law actually requires.
Ultralec is the local specialist for QLD-compliant smoke alarm installation across Noosa, the Sunshine Coast and the Noosa Hinterland — including Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Tewantin, Sunshine Beach, Peregian Springs, Cooroy, Pomona, Eumundi and Gympie. Whether you're a homeowner wanting peace of mind, a landlord needing rental compliance, or a seller preparing your property for settlement, we install smoke alarm systems that actually meet current legislation — not the old-style single-alarm setups from 20 years ago.
Current Queensland Smoke Alarm Legislation
Queensland has some of the strictest smoke alarm laws in Australia. All homes (owner-occupied and rentals) are subject to staged compliance requirements under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990, with full compliance required for new builds and substantially renovated homes now, and for rentals and transferred properties on specific timelines. The requirements are serious — and non-compliance can affect your insurance cover and, for rentals, your ability to lease the property.
The current legislation requires smoke alarms that are:
- Photoelectric only — ionisation alarms are no longer compliant
- Interconnected throughout the dwelling — if one alarm triggers, all alarms sound
- Less than 10 years old — alarms must be replaced every 10 years
- Hardwired (240V mains) with battery backup, OR non-removable 10-year sealed-battery alarms
- Located in every bedroom, in hallways serving bedrooms, and on every level of the home — plus additional locations in some cases
- Compliant with Australian Standard AS 3786:2014
What We Install
We install quality-brand, photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms that meet AS 3786:2014 and current QLD requirements. For most homes we recommend 240V mains-powered alarms with battery backup — they last longer, are more reliable, and interconnect via hardwire. For homes where running new cable is impractical, we can use RF-interconnected 10-year sealed-battery alarms.
Double Mesh & Dual-Sensor Technology — Fewer Nuisance Alarms
One of the most common complaints we hear from homeowners is smoke alarms going off when they cook — or worse, chirping in the middle of the night. The alarms we typically install use dual optical sensors combined with a double insect mesh, which makes a significant difference in day-to-day living:
- Dual optical sensors — two sensing chambers cross-reference each other, so the alarm only triggers when both chambers detect a genuine threat. This dramatically reduces false activations from steam, dust, and cooking fumes that fool single-sensor alarms.
- Double insect mesh — a fine dual-layer mesh prevents insects from entering the sensing chamber. Insects crawling across a sensor are one of the leading causes of nuisance alarms, particularly in Queensland where we have no shortage of bugs.
- Low false alarm rate — the combination means you get reliable, early detection of real smoke while virtually eliminating the 3am chirp from a moth or the alarm going off every time you toast bread.
Remote Hush & Test
We regularly install wireless remote controls that allow you to hush or test your smoke alarms without climbing on a chair. This is particularly useful for:
- High ceilings where reaching the alarm directly is impractical or unsafe
- Elderly residents or anyone with limited mobility
- Quickly hushing an alarm from a cooking incident without disabling the whole system
- Testing all interconnected alarms from a single point during monthly checks
The remote operates across the full interconnected system — one button hushes or tests every alarm in the network simultaneously. Ask us about adding a remote to your installation if you think it'd suit your home.
Every installation includes:
- Full home assessment — identifying every location legislation requires an alarm
- Supply of compliant photoelectric alarms
- Installation with proper circuit protection on the switchboard
- Interconnection testing — making sure all alarms trigger together
- Function test and handover
- Compliance documentation you can provide to property managers, buyers or insurers
Rental Property Smoke Alarm Compliance
Rental properties across Queensland now need to meet the full smoke alarm standard at lease renewal or new tenancy — this affects thousands of properties on the Sunshine Coast, in Noosa's holiday rental market, and across the hinterland. Non-compliance at inspection time means a rapid, expensive catch-up and delays leasing your property.
We work with landlords and property managers across the region to bring rental properties up to full compliance — efficiently, with proper documentation, and without drama. If you manage multiple properties, we can schedule them together to reduce call-out costs.
Pre-Sale & Transfer Compliance Checks
Selling a home in Queensland? Under current legislation, your property needs to meet the new smoke alarm standard at transfer of ownership (in most cases). Addressing this before you go to market avoids last-minute panic and protects the sale. We do pre-sale compliance installs across Pomona, Cooroy, Noosa and Gympie regularly.
Owner-Occupier Upgrades
Even if you're not selling or renting, upgrading to full compliance early is smart. Interconnected alarms give you significantly more warning time during a fire — which is the entire point. Photoelectric alarms are far better at detecting smouldering fires (the kind that typically kill people in their sleep) than the old ionisation alarms. It's one of the highest-value safety upgrades you can do to a home.
Smoke Alarm Installation — Noosa & Sunshine Coast
Noosa has one of the highest concentrations of rental and holiday let properties in Queensland — which means smoke alarm compliance is particularly critical here. Property managers across Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Tewantin and the beachside suburbs are legally obligated to ensure every rental meets the current standard at lease renewal. We work with individual landlords and property management agencies across the Noosa region to bring rental properties into full compliance efficiently, with proper documentation.
For homeowners across the Sunshine Coast — from Peregian Springs and Coolum through to Buderim and Nambour — the owner-occupied compliance deadline of 1 January 2027 is approaching. Getting ahead of it now avoids the rush and the risk of non-compliance affecting your insurance cover.
Smoke Alarm Installation — Noosa Hinterland
Across the hinterland — Pomona, Cooroy, Cooran, Eumundi, Doonan and surrounds — older homes often have ionisation alarms or no interconnection at all. We do a lot of compliance upgrades in the hinterland where the older housing stock hasn't been updated since the legislation changed. A typical hinterland home takes 2–4 hours and we provide full compliance documentation on the day.
