AC vs DC Ceiling Fans — Which Should You Choose?
DC fans use approximately 70% less electricity than older AC motor fans, run more quietly, have more speed settings (typically 6 vs 3), and often have a slimmer, more modern profile. For new installations or replacements, we almost always recommend DC. The energy saving pays back the small price premium within a year in typical Queensland usage.
AC fans are still a good choice for budget replacements or specific applications where DC motors aren't suitable, but for most homes DC is the better investment.
Outdoor Ceiling Fans
Outdoor-rated ceiling fans need to be specifically designed for the purpose — standard indoor fans will corrode and fail quickly in Queensland's humidity and salt air. We install fans on their own dedicated circuit with properly rated wiring and switching. It takes a little longer, costs a little more, and lasts significantly longer. Every installation is tested and comes with compliance documentation.
